After The Storm
- Do not specify “type” of damage, for example “mold” damage or “flood” damage, EVERYTHING is Storm Damage no matter where or what it is.
- Document Everything: Take extensive photos and videos of all damage to your home’s exterior and interior, including walls, floors, ceilings, fixtures, personal belongings, and any structural issues.
- Create an Inventory: Make a detailed list of all damaged or destroyed items, including receipts if possible, and provide it to the adjuster.
- Keep Damaged Items: Do not throw away any damaged items until the adjuster has inspected them.
- Don’t make permanent repairs before the insurance adjuster sees the damage.
- Prevent Further Damage: Make temporary repairs, such as tarping a damaged roof, to prevent additional water or mold damage. Save receipts for these temporary fixes.
- Attend the Meeting: Be present when the adjuster visits your home, as they prefer to meet with the homeowner first.
- Stay Safe: Do not enter any unsafe areas, such as flooded or structurally damaged parts of your home, without ensuring your safety.
- Avoid Admitting Fault: Do not make any statements admitting fault or liability, as this can be used against you and potentially reduce your claim amount.
Questions to Ask the Adjuster
- What are the deadlines for the claims process?
- Are there coverages for temporary living expenses if your home is not livable?
- What specific coverages apply, and what are the policy exclusions or sub-limits?
- How will the settlement amount be determined, and when will you receive funds?
